A Visit to Park Guided by the Ears

Resident of Foz do Iguaçu Launches Sound Project: “Iguassu Falls – A visit with the ears”

Experiencing and visiting Iguassu Falls is a stunning visual experience that evokes different emotions in people from around the world who daily come to this World Wonder of Nature in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, on the border with Argentina. The perception of the tour can be even more intense and complete if visitors focus as well on the other senses it stimulates. That was the case for Carlos Cezare, who decided to return to Iguassu National Park several times to capture the sounds that can be heard in this conservation unit.

The sounds hold a wealth of details at every moment of the tour, from the rare noise of the waterfalls on the Catwalk to the discovery of sounds along the trails of Iguassu National Park. Passionate about the sounds of nature, Carlos Cezare dedicated seven months to capturing the sounds that people can hear in the areas open for public visitation.

When you listen to yourself, you can perceive that there is much more to it than what you can see. It helps complement what you have seen. The chirping of cicadas, the sound of rain, and the movement of animals. All of this encompasses the experience and the moment you were feeling,” reveals Carlos Cezare.

From pleasure came the desire to share the experience, highlights the visitor. The purpose of the recording is also to bring the material to the internet, both for those who have already experienced the place and for those who have not had the opportunity yet, and for people who cannot see. “I also want to reach people who cannot see. I want them to feel how rich and powerful the sounds of this place are.”

“Iguassu Falls – A visit with the ears.” The sound project can be listened to on major audio platforms (links available at the end of the text). A suggestion is to listen to it calmly or with the aim of relaxing. According to Carlos Cezare, the best place to have this experience is where you can listen in a relaxed manner. “At home, on the sofa, in a chair. Wherever you feel comfortable. Play it and imagine what is happening.

By listening to all the sounds of the project, the next visit to Iguassu National Park can have a new meaning. It is an opportunity to listen to what nature has to tell, as if it were its own voice. Much more than just admiring the aesthetic beauty and its sonorous magnitude.

How the inspiration came about – During a sound recording in the interior of São Paulo, Carlos wondered, “What is it like to visit the Falls through sound?” He recounts that this question wouldn’t leave his mind. “I was listening to the sound of the wind in the sugarcane, and this question came to me. What is it like to visit Iguassu Falls with one’s ears? From the entrance at the Visitor Center, following the trip on the buses, walking along the trail, capturing all the sounds.”

Cezare wanted to record the sound of the entire tour. It took months of recording, and the result yielded seven hours of music titled “Iguassu Falls – A visit with the ears.” “Each sound is like an orchestra, with a combination of instruments that fit perfectly into the harmony of life and the space itself. At certain moments during the recording, you can feel people walking, a cicada chirping, or even when the rain comes.

The project was divided into 35 audio tracks covering the entire visitation circuit, offering different experiences. “The most memorable for me was recording the rain at the Falls, a moment I had never experienced before. No sound is the same as another, something changes every day. It’s truly impressive.”

The diversity of the audio captures various moments, including the bus trip right at the beginning of the tour, encompassing specific experiences such as walking on dry leaves along the trail. The audience will encounter relaxing sounds of the waterfalls, the sound of rain falling, the presence of cicadas, and the singing of birds, among other surprises.

Profile – Carlos Cezare is passionate about the sound and scenic beauty of Iguassu National Park. He is a resident of Foz do Iguaçu, holds a degree in Cinema from the Latin American Federal University (UNILA), and works in the audiovisual industry in the Three Borders region.
